The Dry Eye

So what exactly is a dry eye?, often we are told of or hear people we know complaining of dry eyes yet we assume that they’re eyes cant be dry as they keep watering!

There are a lot of people silently affected by this syndrome as they assume that it will self limiting and disappear by itself, however there are steps to be taken in order to tackle this ocular issue. Our lifestyles today which include screens, monitors, driving, bad diets, less water consumption can all lead to the occurrence of dry eyes.

Normally the reason for dry eyes is said to be a defect in the tear production and secretion of our eyes which leaves the water layer of the eyes exposed to the outer atmosphere, however this isn’t correct all the time.

There can be other factors which could also be included in the list of reasons that cause dry eyes such as:

  • Age related dry eyes,
  • Hormonal Changes in the body,
  • Medications that are taken for other conditions,
  • Contact Lens wear,
  • Smoking,
  • Air Conditioning,
  • Lack of sufficient blinking,
  • Working on a computer,
  • Secondary effects of underlying medical conditions.
  • Even simply putting the heating on in Autumn !!!!

How can you tell if you potentially have dry eyes? Well here is a list of symptoms that could possibly answer your unanswered questions:

  • Stinging sensation,
  • Burning feeling,
  • Itching,
  • Visible redness,
  • Irritated,
  • Sensitivity to light,
  • Blurry vision at times,
  • Tired eyes,
  • In a lot of cases the eyes will keep watering.
